Cathy Gorlin, Advertiser on Bet Shalom’s Website

with Eric Bressler

Hi, Cathy! Thank you so much for advertising on our website, www.betshalom.org on the Community Business Directory! Let’s go beyond what’s in your ad and get to know you better as a fellow congregant.

Please tell us about your business!

I am a family law lawyer at Best & Flanagan LLP. That means that I do divorces, custody, child support, spousal maintenance, modification of divorce decrees and orders, antenuptial agreements and everything else related to family law. My firm also has lawyers who specialize in most other legal areas including estate planning and wills, real estate, corporate law and litigation. So I can refer my clients or anyone with a non-family law legal issue to the best lawyers to handle it. We provide hands-on, personal, caring advice, guiding our clients through pivotal changes in their lives.

Why are you advertising on Bet Shalom’s website?

I love to help people. Advertising on Bet Shalom’s website is an entrée to a conversation of “How can I help you?” Many congregants will approach me with, “I’ve seen your ad, you are Cathy Gorlin, right?” and that gets us talking about their situation or their kids’, friends’ or relatives’ legal problems. Sometimes it’s not about family law, and I’m happy to connect others with those I think can best resolve their conundrums.

How long have you been a member of Bet Shalom?

I’ve been a member of Bet Shalom for more than 41 years. We joined when the synagogue was in the JCC (Jewish Community Center) and our daughter’s baby naming was performed there by Rabbi Norman Cohen. Most of our children’s religious school and their bar or bat mitzvot took place in the synagogue when it was in Hopkins. So we’ve seen a lot of changes in Bet Shalom over the years! As young parents we participated in gatherings in people’s homes. Most recently I’ve enjoyed being a member of Bet Shalom’s business networking group and have joined some enjoyable wine tasting dinners at homes of Bet Shalom members.

Marshall, Cathy, Ross, and Roxy in Kauai HI

Tell us about your family.

My husband, Marshall Tanick, also an attorney, and I, married in 1982. We have two children, Lauren (Tanick) Epshteyn and Ross Tanick. Lauren lives with her family in Washington, D.C. where she works for Google, and she is getting licensed as a counselor and therapist for clients with pregnancy or postpartum issues. She has also written some books and is the mother of a 9-year-old boy, Solomon, who attends a Jewish day school in D.C. Ross and his wife Roxy live in Denver where he is a doctor practicing primary care in a clinic run by the University of Colorado (UC Health). He loves the outdoors, hikes, runs, plays tennis and gardens. Marshall is still practicing law (mostly employment and constitutional law matters) and loves to write articles and opinion pieces for numerous publications.

What do you like to do outside of work and family?

Cathy and Marshall in Budapest

We spend January through April in Naples, Florida each year. So while we work remotely from there, we feel like we can be more physically active there during the winter. I am picking up pickleball, and we walk a lot more there daily than we would here during those months. We also spend over three weeks in upstate New York every summer with cousins in a house originally built by my grandfather on a lake where Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York meet. We enjoy traveling. A trip up the Danube River from Budapest to Prague with a memorable stop in Nuremberg was a highlight of the past year, and this October we will visit Marshall’s sister in Scottsdale with a trip to Sedona and to the Grand and Antelope Canyons.

What’s coming up next for you?

I hope to continue to connect with and help people with their legal problems for as long as I can. We have a wonderful family law department at Best & Flanagan which I’m proud to have been a part of for more than 41 years. Let me know if there are any legal or other issues that I can help you resolve, and I’ll eagerly listen and offer a helping hand if I can.
