GERMAN AND AUSTRIAN WINES, AUGUST 13, 2022

Weingut Lagler Gruner Veltliner 2020 (Burgberg Federspiel) @ $21.99 (Wine Chateau): From the Wachau region in Austria, an enticing Gruner with expressive aromas of granny smith apple, white pepper and lemon zest. Light body, but structured and powerful with racy, ripe tree fruits, hints of anise and creamy lees and minerals on the finish. Young and concentrated and great for a variety of food pairings.

Landhaus Mayer Riesling 2017 (Lower Austria) @ $17.99 (Dry) (Wine Watch): Intense floral aromas of lilac with delicate apricot notes. Complex fruit extract with honeyed aromas and balanced, juicy extract with vibrant acidity and a nice, mineral finish.

Robert Weil Riesling Tradition 2018 (Rheingau) @ $23.99 (Off-Dry) Winemaker Notes:The estate-grown Riesling Tradition is a classic rendition of the traditional off-dry style that made the Rheingau famous. It is a cuvée from parcels that neighbor the estate’s top vineyard sites in the villages of Kiedrich and Eltville. A versatile partner at the dinner table, it has an alluring and delicate touch of sweetness paired with tantalizing fruit aromas. It dances on your palate in a perfect pirouette of charm and elegance.

James Suckling: A typical wine style that is all about the full ripeness of the grapes. Some wet slate with attractive, smoky notes, white peaches and lemons. The palate has a very smooth, slightly off-dry edge of white peaches and lemon sorbet. Not sweet – it’s all about sugar balance.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: The 2018 Rheingau Riesling Tradition displays clear and delicate fruit and a flinty slate bouquet reminiscent of Mosel Rieslings. Bottled with a bit more than 20 grams of residual sugar, this is a delicate, mouth-filling and salty-piquant feinherb Riesling with good mineral tension and stimulating salinity. This is an excellent "traditional" Rheingau Riesling.

August Kesseler “The Daily August” Pinot Noir (Rheingau) 2017 @ $24.99 (Wine Enthusiast) Always a crowd-pleaser, this well-priced Pinot is gorgeous from first whiff, offering plumes of dried rose petal, black cherry and earth. It's ripe but elegantly restrained, awakening the palate with hits of pert blackberry edged by burnt caramel and fresh beetroot. Fine, silky tannins make it approachable already but it's structured enough to last a decade.

Dr. Pauly Bergweiler Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese (Mosel) 2018 @ $31.99 (Winemaker Notes): The Sonnenuhr has a fresh and straight forward late harvest character. Ripe yellow stone fruit (vineyard peach, apricot) and tropical fruit (pineapple, mango) are underlined by the fine minerally terroir of Wehlen.

This Riesling is a great food wine. Try it with marinated chicken and bell-pepper-mango chutney with rice

(Wine Enthusiast): Whiffs of mango and guava lend a tropical, sun-kissed tone to this intensely ripe, succulent Spätlese. The palate is deeply concentrated, a showcase of piercing tangerine, pineapple and melon flavors braced by thrilling streaks of acidity. The finish lingers on a delicate lace of sugar.
